Tasting Australia 2012:The Barossa Valley

Tue 1 May 2012

1st Anniversary of OPN Neptune Spear ObL EKIA

06:35 I am back from a bracing jog by the banks of the River Torrens, The sun was still asleep. It was very peaceful. It was cold. Only the sounds of birds flying while the river glimmered like black ice.

Later I am off to the Barossa Valley, home of some of South Australia’s most famous vineyards. It is about 1 hour’s drive from Adelaide.

I shall go now for breakfast in the opulent exclusive Intercontinental Lounge on level 21. I am staying in the posh & strategically located Intercontinental Hotel. Breakfast is ‘superbe’! An ambience of exclusive opulence with Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Eggs on toasted Rye Bread, a Cocktail of Tomato and Orange and Apple juices, freshly brewed Cappuccino dusted with chocolate, sausages, Proscuitto…mmmmm. Yummy!

More later…

After lots and lots of wine tasting, I am back in the huge and sprawling Novotel Barossa Valley Resort. It is a nice hotel but the rooms are miles away literally and you get lost along the way. My friend the GM has kindly instructed her staff to ferry me to and fro my room in the golf buggy which certainly saves time.

The dinner at Jacob’s Creek was absolutely fabulous with skilful Chef Veronica Zahra cooking up a hurricane! The old winery was lit up and looks ethereal. OMG! A most Delicious dinner and with the wines…a gourmet’s dream come true! The Winemaker, svelte & bright Rebekah Richardson explained all about her new experimental wines to me. I especially liked the Negroamaro & Primitivo, both of which have their origins in Puglia, southern Italy, one of my favourite wine regions which I have visited and explored extensively.

Succulent & Sexy Coffin Bay Oysters with Asian Herbs and Mirin Dressing plus aromatic spring onions with 2011 Jacob’s Creek Reserve Barossa Riesling was to kill for. I NEVER say ‘to die for’ because when one is dead, one cannot eat or enjoy anything.

Kangaroo Island Lobster Medallion 12mm thick with zesty Sauce Gribiche matched with 2011 Jacob’s Creek Steingarten Riesling blew my mind! Enjoy! {:-)
