The Travelling Gourmet live from the Barossa

I am now in Chateau Tanunda which won the IWSC in London 2010 for World’s BEST Shiraz – 2005 The Everest Chateau Cru Shiraz and World’s BEST Grenache 2008 The Everest Old Bush Vine Grenache!

The building is very different from that of a French Chateau in la Val de la Loire, for example, but impressive nonetheless. Breakfast was fantastic at Rockford Wines with an rose-purple BUBBLY Aperitif of Trilogy Sparkling Shiraz more commonly known as “Barossa Coffee”, followed by Four Leaf Organic Oat Muesli with Pomegranate Syrup and get this, all the carrots, pomegranate, almonds, onions, quince, galangal, lemongrass and much more are all grown on the Farm.

Andrew Quin, the Winemaker of Hartley Farm Wines showed me the exact terroir of his winery which makes some superb Shiraz, with pepper notes and soft tannins and that is only the 2011! The Greenock Creek area has a lot of rocky alluvial soils but this makes his wines unique and tasty.

Now 14:16 and I must go for a Wine Masterclass of Barossa wines. The tasting of 12 Shiraz of 2009 from various ‘terriors’ was well organised by James March. I learned a lot. There is always something new to learn in the world of food and wine. As Socrates, the ancient Greek Philosopher said: The only true wisdom is when one realises one knows nothing.

  3. It was 9C early this am when the sun was just waking up when I went for a lovely swim in the pool. 1.5m deep at the deep end.
