Story & photos by Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling GourmetTM
The resourceful Travelling Gourmet tests sunny Singapore’s latest Italian ristorante two days before its soft opening…
MY friend, Jacco Klipp from the Netherlands asked me to test the menu & give suggestions for improvement for his spanking new ristorante before it opens on 25 July. I took the high speed lift in Ocean Financial Centre to level 43. His pretty “Angels” brought me to a comfy booth table at the far end of the futuristic restaurant. Black, red, grey and brown are the main colours with pine tables and floors. The impressive centerpiece is a zippy rotunda bar with steel wire sculpture reaching to the high ceiling. Before you reach your table, you stroll past the 2 kitchens on your right and left with glass windows. The windows enable you to observe the chefs at work. Being a trained Chef by way of CIA and Le Cordon Bleu, the action in the kitchen always fascinates and excites me! Chef Roberto from Italy could be seen furiously plating the dishes.
The novel concept here is there are no structured hors d’oeuvres, main courses and so on. You simply choose from the extensive menu what you like and request the servers to bring them out either one by one or all at once. Apart from the excellent Griglia (grill) items, there are also soups, antipasti, pasta and pizze. The portions are smaller than normal but only slightly and you are recommended to order at least 3 dishes unless you are on a diet.
The Beef alla Griglia is so YUMMY!
