The irascible Travelling Gourmet goes to Orchard Central for a touch of Alsatian cuisine in the form of…

MOUTHWATERING Flammekueche made with a thin bread dough. When baked it is just 2.5mm thick. Spread some French cream cheese with creme fraiche on top and then add the delicious toppings like thinly sliced shitake mushrooms, French ‘Emmental‘ style cheese (not Swiss), bacon bits paysanne 4mm by 4mm…Oh, La! La! Yummie! This is the Fresh Mushroom Gratinee at S$16++.

“The French Flam” has big nuggets of good quality walnut plus a pleasing gooey, sticky mouth-feel, French Camembert with a sapido flavour with a slightly bitter aftertaste characteristic of Camembert…and of course real bacon bits. Osama bin Laden would like it here, if only the Navy SEALs from DEVGRU had not put three 5.56mm hollow point bullets in his brain. That is a joke in the best Germen “Galgenhumor” style. It means black humour.

They use real pork bacon here…and the rennet to make the cheese is also not halal BUT…there are pork-free options.

For a sweetie, taste Flammkueche mit Schockalade und Birnen or Alsatian Flatbread with Chocolate & Pear. The pear is canned pear but it is not too bad. Lynette, the Asst. Mgr and Georgai are very helpful.

I like it here. It is not haute cuisine but nice and bright and the mandarin-orange coloured polo shirts of the waitresses match the upholstery on the sofa seats. The restauarnt has a happy aura. They have Flam’s in ‘la ville lumiere‘ that is Paris too. Bon appetit! {:-)
