The suave & debonair Travelling Gourmet goes to the University town of Oxford and explores an ancient Castle full of ghosts, cells & tales of tortured souls…
MALMAISON is a hotel that used to be a jail. It means in French, ‘bad house”. Next to it is Oxford Castle that also used to be a jail full, and I mean, FULL of prisoners. Another tale of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. Thankfully, those days are long gone and now it is a museum that is fascinating to visit.
I strolled in to see huge walls so sturdy and worn by time but still in good nick as it were. Inside I saw the well stocked Gift Shop with many really nice souvenirs to bring back to remember your visit. I began my tour and goosebumps appeared on my skin as I felt a chill in the air…There is an eerie feel to this place. You can almost hear the wails and screams of the tortured prisoners echo in the dark corridors. They even used to make the prisoners turn a wheel round and round for no reason other than to punish them with ‘hard labour’
To be continued…
