SAS Sacher!

Story & Photos by Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling GourmetTM

The intrepid & debonair Travelling Gourmet visits the center of the ancient Austro-Hungarian Empire and stays at the…

MAGNIFICENT home of that most delicious of desserts. The name is Torte…Sacher Torte. To call it it a cake would be an insult. Mouthwatering, moist, sweet but not overly so, perfumed, redolent with the flavours of premium chocolate and sexy mouthwatering Marillen Marmalade (apricot conserve) with a tangy, zesty flavour, a light very well aerated texture…OMG! It is to kill for! Just as the haunting theme from ,Der dritte Mann’, The Third Man, a classic movie set in Vienna starring Joseph Cotton & Orson Welles, sets the movie…so the immortal Sacher Torte sets the Hotel Sacher and vice versa.

SAS stands for ‘Splendide & Superbe’, for that is what this Grand Dame of Vienna is…Over the many glorious years of his history it has hosted celebrities and VVIPs whose photos and autographs decorate the walls near the discreet reception. Justin Bieber came to stay here when I was an inhouse guest and the Vienna Polizei had to escort me in and out through the screaming young fans, mostly teenage girls. I love to stay in a wonderfully opulent and super-comfortable suite overlooking my favourite museum in Vienna.

It is, of course, the Albertina Museum where my favourite painting is displayed. It is ,Der Hase’. My suite was decorated with lovely & valuable old paintings. It was so comfortable and inviting, I had to force myself to go out for meals and sightseeing. It is the kind of suite that you simply do not want to leave…Incidentally, there are over 1000 genuine objets d’art &precious paintings all over the hotel. I like the one of the founder, Anna Sacher, an iron lady like Margaret Thatcher on level 2.

The location of the Sacher is very strategic with the pedestrian shopping street and the iconic Stefansdom just some 10  to 13 minutes walk away. The enchanting Belvedere Schloss which houses works by renowned Gustav Klimt and other luminaries of the Impressionistic genre is only a short ride away by tram.

Fabulous Fruehstueck!

One unique feature is the ,Steinwasser’ like Amethyst Water. It has big pieces of purple amethyst inside the water. Austrians belive that drinking “Stone-Water” is good for your health. I think it works, I drank a lot of it and I felt really good! The young Chef at the hot station is very good. I tested him with my order of Spanish Omelette and ,,hart gekoechte Ei” or hard boiled egg. I am very pleased to say he passed with flying colours.

Sometime ago, there were misguided imposters trying to hijack my trademark, “The Travelling GourmetTM”. They FAILED. I have friends in high and low places and very good lawyers. My dear lawyers tell me if anyone uses my trademark, my lawyers will make me rich by suing them to poverty…It is the same with the Hotel Sacher and the very famous ORIGINAL Sacher Torte. There is only ONE Original Sacher Torte from the Hotel Sacher in Vienna and Salzburg! There is only ONE “The Travelling GourmetTM”. Beware of fakes! Enjoy! 🙂

To be continued…
