Story & photos by Dr.Michael Lim The Travelling GourmetTM
Who tells you about a dear family friend who used to be a “Flying Tiger” in
World War 2…
MARVELLOUSLY fit Captain (retired) Winky Ho is now 93 years and over 7 months old. He is still hale and hearty, and was a B25 Bomber Pilot in World War 2 flying combat missions in the China, Burma, India (CBI) Theatre of Operations. I asked him once why he joined the Flying Tigers to fight the Japanese Imperial Army who had occupied China. Winky replied, “It was for food. There was no food as a refugee in China after I escaped from Hong Kong Island when the Japanese invaded. As Flying Tiger, there was lots of foo so I never went hungry!” A most pragmatic reason…He survived many combat missions bombing and strafing Japanese assets without even a flesh wound! He became a commercial pilot after WW2 and eventually became the Chief Pilot of Singapore Airlines responsible for training many junior pilots to fly the Boeing 747 Jumbo jet, among other duties.
Please have a look at his website/blog that I helped set up for him to write his memoirs of WW2.
Very often, Truth is much stranger than fiction…
