The suave and debonair Travelling Gourmet tells all…about…
MOST probably one of the wine world’s best kept secrets…Fluessiges GOLD…Liquid Gold, bright, luscious, fruity…Austria’s famous and irresistable Sweet Dessert wines! Way back in 1526, the very first Trockenbeerenauslese was produced in the rustic Pannonian region. The region around the Neusiedlersee (lake Neusiedl) has the unique macro-climate to produce these exuberant, exotic and excellent wines…found nowhere else in the world. Noble Rot or Botrytis cinerea extract the water from the wine grapes thus concentrating the flavours, aromas and textures…Fermentation can go on for months…simply because the yeasts have to work extremely hard to ferment the high content of sugars in the must…into many alcohols.
Sweet Seduction…
Like a rapturous and ravishing lady with blond hair and a voluptuous figure, these wines from Chardonnay and Weissburgunder to Bouvier…aroma powerful Muskateller, Muskat-Ottonel, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Saemling (also known as Scheurebe) and more…offer a sexy spectrum of delicious and seductive wines. They are wines to LIVE for!
Of course, they are perfect with desserts like berries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, redcurrants…Creme Brulee, la Bombe Alaska, Pannacotta, not to mention Apfel Strudel! On a recent visit to Austria, I could not get enough of these magnificent wines paired with exquisite Austrian desserts like
- Kaiserschmarren (Kaiser Pancakes)
- Meraner Torte
- Mohnkuchen (Poppy Seed Cake)
- Napfkuchen (Turban Cake)
- Mohr im hemd (Chocolate Hazelnut Pudding)
- Palatschinken and of course…the one, the only SACHERTORTE!
Please be aware that there is only ONE ORIGINAL Sacher-Torte from the Hotel Sacher in Wien/Vienna. Beware of fakes! Similarly, there is only ONE The Travelling GourmetTM. Beware of imposters! Oh, the Sacher-Torte, I dream of it every night… 🙂
Guten Appetit!

POST SCRIPT: On a recent visit to Vienna, I visited and taste so many excellent wines with my good friend, Fritz Wieninger owner and winemaker of Weingut Wieninger, whose wines are meticulously made to be enjoyed with food. They go especially well with Asian food like Crispy Peking Duck! The best Peking Duck in Singapore is at Wan Hao Restaurant…in the Marriott hotel.
It is nice to be important…BUT more important to be nice. Enjoy! 🙂
