The irreverent and debonair Travelling Gourmet TM goes incognito to check out the Kaya Toast at…
MEETING Point Cafe in modern and airy Bedok Food Centre adjacent to Bedok Mall. There was a long queue of people hungry for breakfast before going to work. My Breitling titanium watch told me it was just 07:08 early this morning. Outside there was heavy monsoon rain pouring down. I studied the menu. Despite its impressive name it is not really a cafe but more like a food stall that even serves cappuccino! I opted for the Breakfast Set Meal at S$2.80. Quick as a flash, the “Auntie” behind the counter served up a big blue plastic made in Malaysia cup full of boiling hot water in which were two submerged eggs, a cup of piping hot black coffee known as “Kopi O” and a canary yellow melamine plate of Kaya Toast (white bread). The toast was nicely presented neatly sliced into two symmetrical triangles. I took photos and then opened the bread up. Voila! Better than Toast Box and Ya Kun Kaya Toast! There was more Kaya Egg Jam and more butter AND it was almost 50 % cheaper than Toast Box and Ya Kun Kaya Toast! The lightly toasted bread was nice and crunchy and the butter melted nicely into the bread…Yummie! I left the eggs to cook in the hot water for 5 minutes using my Breitling stopwatch to time them. Then I carefully cracked the soft boiled eggs myself and scoffed them all! They even give you slightly sweet dark Soy Sauce and white pepper to add to your taste. With a full tummy…now I knew why there was such a long queue…
Forget Toast Box and Ya Kun Kaya Toast when you want Coffee, Eggs and Kaya Toast for your breakfast…this place is better. I have heard there is another good place for Kaya Toast, also in Bedok. When I try it I shall let you know…
ENJOY! 🙂
