MARVELLOUS Penang Hawker’s Fare at the York Hotel from 4 to 20 September, 2015. York Hotel flies in Penang’s best hawkers three time a year to put on an extravaganza of wholesome Penang Hawker specialities that Singaporeans crave for. It has been going strong since 1986!
I want Lobak!
Alas, this time my good friend the Lor Bak King was not there. He is now doing big business supplying his Lor Bak to restaurants and hotels in Malaysia. Nevertheless his replacement was pretty good and I relished his version of crackly bean curd skinned Lor Bak with lean pork, and also his Prawn Fritters (Hair Chee).

Good ol’ Char Koay Teow was excellent with lots of prawns and cockles as was the Jew Hoo Eng Chye (Cuttlefish Kang Kong) with its sexy sweet and spicy sauce. I also feasted on limitless servings of Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee with its tasty intensely flavoured Prawn Soup made with the shells and heads of prawns, piquant and zangy (zesty and tangy) Penang Assam (Tamarind) Laksa with lashings of Hair Ko (thick black prawn paste with the viscosity of aged Aceto Balsamico), fragrant Penang Style Coconut infused Nasi Lemak with Kari Kapitan (aka The Captain’s Curry), spicy Penang Rojak with crushed Peanuts and crunchy Jambu Ayer, Guava and Torch Ginger, Oh Chien (Oyster Omelette) with lashings of plump juicy oysters and last, but most certainly not least…Koay Teow Th’ng (Rice Noodle Consomme with shredded chicken)!

For the Dessert fiend, of which I admit I am one…freshy made a la minute thin and crispy Ban Chang Kueh with crushed peanuts, psychedelic Ice Kachang with Red Beans and Attap Chee and Chendol with lots and lots of seductive Gula Melaka (Coconut Palm Sugar syrup)! the beverage of choice with all this yummie food is home made Iced Barley!
OMG! Penang food from the Pearl of the Orient that is the Island of Penang…Ich liebe es sehr! (I love it very much) Selamat menjamu selera! (Bon appetit in Malay)
