The dynamic and indomitable Travelling Gourmet TM jets on Silkair to Penang, the tropical island called Pearl of the Orient and tells you about a hotel that…
MOST hoteliers have heard of. It is, of course, the E & O hotel. This was the FIRST hotel built by the famous Sarkies’ brothers. Their second equally distinctive hotel is the Raffles in sunny Singapore…beloved of William Somerset Maugham and other celebrities. I have loved this property for many years and had the luck to stay her sometime ago when it re-opened after a multi million dollar renovation and refurbishment. Now I am back and this time there is a new and very opulent Heritage Wing and my suite is very salubrious indeed. After all, life is too short to have less than the best! Previously there was only the historic old wing…but now there are two swimming pools and two gyms and a posh Spa too! OMG! Heavenly! One is an infinity pool and the ambience is so serence and tranquil…to swim and sunbathe while looking at the ships and fishing boats on the sea and far horizon. To feed the inner man I recommend the Traditional Afternoon Tea in 1885 restaurant. It is named for the year the E & O opened over 131 years ago! Scones, Cream, Strawberry Jam, Salmon and Cucumber Sandwiches, Strawberry Macarons, Cheesecake, Raspberry Panna Cotta and much more…What a civilised way to spend an afternoon…and to accompany the fabulous food, Irish Whiskey Tea! Yummie! Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling Gourmet TM who is a celebrated Travel, Food and Wine Writer and Editor says, “Absolutely spiffing old chap!” 🙂 The extraordinary E & O hotel is loved by Orientals and Occidentals alike…
