The audacious and intrepid Travelling Gourmet TM reveals some top spots for good nosh in Virginia…like a place where…

MONUMENTAL nostalgia reigns…in James Shield’s Tavern, where you scoff authentic recreations of the cosmopolitan imports of the Colonies in America in the 18th century. Cane sugar, molasses, and rum from the West Indies and Caribbean. Winsome wines from Portugal…African coffee, and tea from China and more… Savor unique spice blends from around the world…and try colonial favorites like black eye pea soup, butter chicken, and West African casserole.

MY favorites at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern…

I love the HUGE and I mean huge yard cloth napkins! For sure NO spots of gravy on your best bespoke shirt from Brooks Brothers…

Man about town Casanova loved OYSTERS before his regular romantic rendez-vous with…?
Tavern Oyster Salet
US$13.25
Plump flash-fried Oysters on a cosy futon of mixed Greens & Coleslaw with sweet Gun-Powder sauce. It won’t explode on your palate but it is mighty tasty!

I am also partial to:
Waterman’s Supper
US$35
Not one, not two but THREE courses! Starting with a cup of the Eastern Shore Clam Chowder followed by a dish of Grid-iron grilled Salmon, with a SAS (shrimp and scallop) Brochette adorning a bed of Pilaf Rice laced with a Lemon-dill cream and…sweet finale with your choice of ice cream! I love ice cream!
Christiana Campbell's Tavern-Colonial Williamsburg: Waterman's Supper at Christana Campbell's
The waiters, waitresses are in traditional historic costumes of the 18th Century period, and there is even Christiana Campbell herself played by a jovial and jolly plump lady, as plump as the oysters here. Christiana entertains with tall tales and ribald jokes! If you are very lucky, General George Washington, America’s first spymaster extraordinaire will make an entrance…Wandering troubadors play the fiddle for you while you dine in colonial splendour…what more can you ask for mes amis?
Casual and cooool place…spooks, pay heed…no need to dress up in your Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses, ninja-black Brooks Brothers men’s suits, dark blue tie and white shirt…:-) ENJOY!
