MARVELLOUS Island Shangri-La hotel in Hong Kong. The location is very near the Convention Center and Harbour, about one hour’s drive from Hong Kong International Airport. Although it is some 23 years old, this hotel exudes old world charm from the crystal chandeliers to the Louis XVI furniture and the uniforms of the bell boys. The uniformed page boys with their pillbox hats reminded me of the comedy movie called “The Grand Budapest Hotel” starring Ralph “Sky High Club member” Fiennes. The rooms and suites have all the mod cons including curtains and drapes that open at the touch of a button on your bedside console. Very James Bond…I recommend the rooms and suites with a delicious view of Hong Kong Harbour. What an inspiring sight to wake up to in the morning! Hong Kong actually translates as “Fragrant Harbour”. Hong Kong as a Crown Colony was developed in part by mercenary British drug dealers aka opium lords.. now better known as Jardine Matheson. The location is most convenient. It is situated in Pacific Place, a very huge upmarket shopping centre with a supermarkets that I like a lot. It is Gr-EAT Food Hall which has all the wines and yummies that any discerning gourmet desires.
The Shangri-La’s Horizon Clib is as luxurious as it is opulent. The decor is very European and very impressive.
The Island Shangri-La has not one but TWO Michelin Starred restaurants, namely, Summer Palace with two Michelin Stars and Petrus with one Michelin Star. I had a scrumptious dinner in Summer Palace! I especially liked Chef Ip’s Crystal Ham which had a layer of flavourful Aspic jelly with the meat.
