The intrepid and irrepressible Travelling Gourmet TM goes to…

MIDDLE Road in sunny Singapore…to find the BIG Hotel. True to its name the structure is big and located very near the National Library. Billed as a chic and trendy boutique hotel, they have a restaurant called Froth. Well, I always like to make it BIG! There is no swimming pool but a nice Gym, albeit small on Level 1. An Art Gallery is on Level 1 and Tipple, a wine and whisky bar due to open on 10 April. I decided to go for a workout in the Gym before dinner, and met Carmen. Carmen is a pretty Surgeon from Alicante in Spain. I asked her about the BIG hotel and she explained, ‘I found it on the internet and it’s nice. I have one week’s holiday for Easter so I came to Singapore…’

The BIG Star Suite is the best room in the BIG hotel. There is a BIG flat screen LG TV and your own Samsung Tablet to check emails and write reports. I am writing this article now on the Tablet! You also get complimentary Movies on Demand with Action, Comedy, Romance and Drama genres. The wood fittings and furniture are well designed to make full ergonomic use of the available space. I liked the spacious Hansa shower and rain shower. You also have your own Nespresso machine and Tefal kettle to brew your own Dilmah English Breakfast tea or Green tea provided. In the corridor an ice machine and hot and cold water cooler are provided. No paintings on the concrete walls but you must realise that this hotel is done in the ‘Industrial Chic’ style. It reminded me of the Hotel Daniel in Vienna where the GM, Dieter Bischoff is a good friend.

Fun, Food & FROTH!

MENUS on picture frames hang on the walls. For drinks try the unique Ice Cream Milkshakes like Bubble Gum, Sea Salt Caramel, Toasted Marshmallow and Vanilla Bean. Extremely creamy and delicious. Or there is good ol’ Tiger beer and Hoegaarden. For starters I recommend Grilled Portobello…marvellously presented on a rectangular plate and looking like a manicured garden…Portobello wedges, Enoki Mushrooms, White Spargel (Asparagus), black Truffle Mushroom Puree, shaved squares of Parmigiano Cheese and Roasted Potatoes delight your palate. Friedly and cheerful Head Chef Derrick Ow told me, ‘I try to make my food different from other restaurants…and incorporate some fusion elements like Yuan Yang Risotto.’

 

 

BIG Breakfast…
There are 4 different sets including an Asian Nash Lemak set. I liked the Omelette with Sausage. The inside of the tasty omelette was soft and ever so slightly runny. This is as it should be. Many moons ago a British Army Chef in the Royal Army Catering Corps taught me how to mske the perfect omelette. Help yourself to tea, coffee, orange juice, toasted wholemeal or white bread, apples, orange slices and water melon. Rice Crispies cereal with milk too. Intriguing Green Apple Jelly Jam that looked like Mint jelly for Lamb!
